What is the role of citizens in the legislative process?

SDIF provides a nonpartisan atmosphere to deliberate relevant citizen issues. One of the discussion topics, posed by SDIF this year, is what you believe your role is and should be in the legislative process. Let us know! Your responses will be shared with others. Please include your state of residence in the body of the post.

We appreciate your input. You do have a voice! .... SDIF

I think citizens should be more active and legislators should take more time to listen to what the public is saying... maybe by having committees that consist of various demographics, or going into the schools to speak with students and staff etc... (SDakota)

I agree with Equip. All levels of our government should pay more attention to it's constituents. Every citizen has a right to a voice in our government and every opinion has some merrit. We have some chance to communicate with our legislators with legislative email or during 'cracker barrels', but these sessions sometimes turn into defense sessions for the elected. Personal opinion is not public representation. Our state offices do a pretty good job of working with the public. Our governor could listen more to citizens.
This is a democracy, a citizen government. Our youth have much to share. Fresh ideas offer possibilities!
